Albero, a formal naval officer and educational professional, will begin a walk from home plate at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., to home plate at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., — a trek over 1,200 miles — in support of the Wounded Warrior Project. To honor his nephew Gary Albero, who died in the 9/11 attacks, Mr. Albero wanted to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, while incorporating Gary’s love for the New York Yankees. To do this, each mile of the walk is dedicated to a different New York Yankees player in the team’s history. Mr. Albero’s intent is to raise $25,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project, with $9,000 already having been reached. Donations may be made in the form of “Designated Hitter,” “Base on Balls,” “Single,” “Double,” “Triple,” “Home Run” or “Grand Slam.” “My goal is to support the soldiers who have bravely fought to protect us,” said Mr. Albero. Walking an average of 20 miles a day, the 65-year-old Mr. Albero plans to complete the journey within three months with support drivers by his side. To make a donation, please go to richardsyankeeswalk.org. The official Twitter account of Mr. Albero’s walk is @YankeeWalkWWP.
