Metropolitan Riveters to Faceoff with Connecticut Whale in Pittsburgh

The National Women’s Hockey League announced on Tuesday that the Pittsburgh Penguins, of the National Hockey League, for the third straight season, will play a part helping to grow the game, as the Metropolitan Riveters and Connecticut Whale will faceoff at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex on December 2, 2018.

The Penguins state of the art practice facility, located in the Pittsburgh suburb of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania host the 2017 NWHL All-Star Game. The Whale also skated in the building, this past season, as they took on the Buffalo Beauts.

This season’s matchup will feature 2018 United States Olympic gold medalist and Riveters forward, Amanda Kessel. Kessel’s brother, Phil plays right wing for the Penguins.

Kessel said, “Pittsburgh is a special place for my family, so I’m really looking forward to being with the Riveters in front of the city’s great hockey fans on December 2. Playing in the 2017 NWHL All-Star Game in Pittsburgh was a lot of fun, and the support from the fans was incredible. The Penguins organization has been an amazing partner for the NWHL and tremendous for the development of our sport across all levels.”

In addition to serving as the Penguins, the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex will also host the United States Hockey League Fall Classic in September, plus other USA Hockey events throughout the year.

The President of the facility, Rich Hixon said, “We look forward to hosting Amanda and the NWHL for another great event in December. We enjoy working together with the NWHL to promote women’s hockey and hockey at all levels and will have several related events that weekend.”

The puck will drop in Western Pennsylvania at 3:30 PM on Sunday December 2. Tickets are available at https://www.seetickets.us/event/Riveters-at-Whale/368177.

The league also announced Monday that for the second straight season they will have a doubleheader with the NHL. Last season the Riveters, who formed a strategic partnership with the New Jersey Devils, opened the season against the Boston Pride at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The Devils then battled the Arizona Coyotes in the nightcap.

This season, the Beauts, who were acquired by the Buffalo Sabres in January will faceoff against the expansion Minnesota Whitecaps at the KeyBank Center on December 29, at 2:00 PM. The Sabres will then take on the Boston Bruins later in the evening.

Fans purchasing tickets to the Sabres game in the evening will receive a ticket to the matinee game between the Beauts and Whitecaps. Season tickets for the Beauts, include all eight games for a price of 120 dollars. As an additional bonus, all season ticket holders will receive a voucher for one 300 level ticket to a Sabres game during the 2018-2019 season.
