Union (NJ) Suburban Golf Club head professional Mark McCormick of Middletown, New Jersey earned medalist honors after a solid 4-under 67, highlighted by five birdies on the back nine, was one of four players Wednesday at Bonnie Briar Country Club in Larchmont, New York to advance through USGA Sectional Qualifying for the 2017 U.S. Senior Open Championship.

Amateur Daniel Russo of Hagaman, New York fired a 2-under 69, MGA Senior Open champion Jim McGovern of Oradell, New Jersey shot a 1-under 70, and amateur George Zahringer III of New York, New York made par of the second playoff hole of a five-for-one playoff to earn the last spot.

Today’s qualifiers advanced to the 2017 U.S. Senior Open Championship (June 29-July 2) at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Massachusetts. The final field for the championship will be comprised of 156 golfers who will play 72 holes of stroke play with a cut to low 60 and ties following the completion of the second round.

The event was open for entry to any professional and amateur golfer who is 50 years of age who owned a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 3.4.

Jerry Courville, Jr., of Stratford, Connecticut and amateur Brian Brown of Lindenhurst, New York earned first and second alternate sports respectively.

144 players competed at Bonnie Briar CC , which played to a par 71 at 6,294 yards.
