New Mets Manager Carlos Beltran: ‘I can’t wait to rewrite our story’

With his children and wife watching in the front row, it looked as if Carlos Beltran was living a dream. Back in the orange and blue for the first time since 2011, the 42-year-old leaves all the controversial history behind him. Beltran is also looking to start fresh with all of the young players on the team.

“I’m overwhelmed, a little bit overwhelmed by this opportunity,” Beltran stated during his (re)introductory press conference on Monday morning. “But at the same time, I’m excited.”

Slipping on his signature number 15 jersey and taking pictures with the Wilpons, it felt like old times for Beltran. This time, however, there were warmer feelings. Prior to being traded for Zack Wheeler, the Wilpons were not shy when stating Beltran wasn’t the same player he was when they initially signed him. All of that drama appeared to be washed away. Beltran even stated that during the interviews to become the manager there was no ill will from either party.

It was a very interesting search for a Mets manager following the firing of Mickey Callaway. General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen discussed what he saw in Beltran that he didn’t see from available, experienced coaches in Joe Maddon and Joe Girardi. He stated Beltran was poised, trustworthy, has a growth mindset (a learner), committed to beating his opponent and that he has an unrivaled appreciation and understanding of players.

As far as the last fact, Beltran pointed out that he wants to motivate and be a role model for the young players on the team. He was emotional as he mentioned his kids. Carlos hopes his dream that became a reality happens to all young athletes from all over.

“Fight for your dreams… there is no doubt anyone can do it,” Beltran stated to the children in Puerto Rico wanting to make a difference.

He mentioned Terry Collins as a man who will be a mentor to him this season. Beltran did not, however, state as of this moment if he will be the bench coach. As far as his goals for the 2020 season? Beltran hopes to have a fun clubhouse environment, while also utilizing a veteran coaching staff to help grow the team. While it is a learning process, he hopes starting fresh will result in a successful run for the organization.

“Thank you for believing in me,” Beltran went on to say. “I just can’t wait to rewrite our story being manager of the New York Mets.”
