NFL Trade Deadline Quiet Again for New York Giants

Another NFL Trade Deadline has passed, and it once again saw the New York Giants standing pat.

Despite the 1-6 record to start off their 2017 season, the New York front office decided to keep the roster intact on Tuesday after 4:00 PM EST. Reese’s reputation of being conservative at the trade deadline grew more. In one of the most active deadlines in recent memory, the Giants were a non-factor.

Let’s look at the deals that went down, which are significant to the Giants’ standing.

Ajayi to the Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles acquired stud running back Jay Ajayi from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2018 fourth round draft pick. This trade was a true stunner on Tuesday, especially with the return that the Dolphins got for their starting running back.  Not saying that the Giants should have traded for Ajayi. They could have used that format to shop one running back in particular, however: Shane Vereen.

The pass catching rusher has not been used to his full potential by New York this season. Yet, there are other teams that could have used his services to make a push for a playoff spot. While Vereen would not have commanded a fourth, the Giants could have certainly gotten a late round pick.

Duane Brown to the Seahawks

A move that has been speculated for the longest time became a reality. The Houston Texans have traded left tackle Duane Brown and a 2018 fifth round pick to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a 2018 third rounder and a 2019 second rounder.

This was a move that the Seahawks needed, as they were plagued by injuries on the offensive line.

The Giants were also rumored to trade for him, ever since Brown held out with Houston for a contract extension. Adding a three-time Pro Bowl left tackle could have helped New York, as the deal was not necessarily out of reach. However, the Giants and Reese decided to stick with the much-scrutinized Ereck Flowers Experiment.

Flowers continues to be a project and continues to frustrate New York fans, alike. Acquiring a tackle like Brown could have certainly helped the Giants, before all of their injuries and losses this season. Eli Manning and the running game would have benefited from this potential addition. Yet, it was too little, too late for the Giants, as a potential solution has moved onto the Queen City.

Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers

The football world shook on Monday night, as the San Francisco 49ers acquired New England Patriots’ quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in exchange for a 2018 second round draft pick.

The move exemplifies that the Patriots are well prepared for Tom Brady to play  in the next two-to-three years. This trade is relevant to New York due to the age of Manning. No, the Giants should not have traded for Garoppolo. However, the Giants need to look at their long term future.

There were rumors circulating the past couple of weeks that New York would attempt to trade Manning to another team. The top team that came up was the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yet, they were just that, rumors. While it was highly implausible that Manning would waive his no trade clause, the Giants have to prepare for a life without Manning.

Odell Wants Jarvis in New York?

Okay, so this trade was never made, and it was highly doubtful to have even happened. As mentioned above, the Dolphins traded away Ajayi, which caused many to believe that Miami was having a “fire-sale.” That includes Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

Beckham took to Twitter to announce his desire to have his former LSU teammate come to New York.

This was a trade that was not likely to happen, especially with the Giants. The Dolphins were willing to move on from Landry, “for the right price.” Even if it were to happen, the acquisition would not make sense. Especially while sitting in last place in the NFC East, with the Eagles having a stranglehold on first place.

It was worth a shot, Odell, even though the request was a reach.

DRC Stays Put

With the deadline approaching closer and closer, one of the rumored Giants to be on the move was Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Coming off of a one game suspension in Week 7, Rodgers-Cromartie saw limited snaps in his return in Week 8 against the Seattle Seahawks. That decision by head coach Ben McAdoo stirred the pot in regards to his future with the team.

There were many teams in need with cornerback help, especially the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, reports indicated that Rodgers-Cromartie let the Giants front office that he did not want to be traded. He also told his agent the same thing. That idea went out the window.

In Conclusion

Reese had to face the music last week where he answered questions about the disappointing start to the season. While his answers were met with a lot of criticism, somewhat deservedly for the various contradictions he provided in that presser.

With Reese and McAdoo stating their intention to win the final nine games of the season, Giants fans, analysts and reporters are highly skeptical. The decision to stand pat at this deadline and stick with the current roster, Reese will have to face the music at the end of the season.
