Patriots Take Rubber Match Over Skeeters

87eggyslidewebSugar Land, TX – The Somerset Patriots (15-15, 53-37) topped the Sugar Land Skeeters (18-13, 53-48) 9-6 in the rubber match Sunday evening at Constellation Field. Every Somerset starter tallied a base hit by the fourth inning.

“We had a good approach this series where we never took batting practice outside and conserved our energy by hitting in the cage. It worked because we came to play and we fed off each other,” said Carlos Guzman as Somerset scored 26 runs and totaled 43 hits in the three game set.

For the fourth straight game Somerset scored in the first inning. Both Eric Farris and Bryan LaHair notched RBI singles to give the Patriots a 2-0 advantage.

Somerset added five more in the second inning. Farris cranked a two-run double, David Vidal roped a two-run single, and Kyle Roller added an RBI double.

Patrick Palmeiro coaxed a bases loaded walk in the in the bottom of the second inning to get the Skeeters on the scoreboard and make the contest 7-1.

Two more runs were tacked on by the visitors in the third inning as Vidal and Aharon Eggleston recorded RBI singles.

After a Beamer Weems RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, the very next batter was Palmeiro and he launched a grand slam (6) to cut the deficit to 9-6 which would be the final.

Jim Miller (1-0) earned the win tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Brett Marshall (1-5) sustained the loss. He yielded seven runs in two frames. Jon Hunton notched his 26th save pitching a perfect ninth inning.
