Much has been made recently about 2015 Rutgers football signee Jawuan Harris. The St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) athlete signed on the dotted line in February on National Signing Day, pledging to play football at wide receiver for the Scarlet Knights. With an arrangement between head football coach Kyle Flood, and head baseball coach Joe Litterio, Harris was to walk-on to the baseball team during the spring.

On the gridiron this past fall, Harris helped the Florida school go 15-1, winning the Class 7A state title, catching 30 passes for 700 yards and 12 touchdowns to lead the team.

His junior year of high school on the diamond, Harris hit .191 with with 10 RBI and 15 stolen bases. Not exactly numbers that scream all-star.

However, Harris must have stepped in something because he exploded his senior season this spring with a .440 batting average, three home runs, 18 RBI’s, and 44 stolen bases, attracting scouts’ eyes.

The 5-11, 175-pounder will play in the state’s baseball all-star game according to the Sun Sentinel, and has workouts with one American League team, and two National League teams in the MLB.

Double G Sports last caught up with Harris in March, and now, with all the baseball success, and evidently the football success, he has an interesting decision to make.

“He’ll be faced with one of two choices when he’s drafted,” according to the Sentinel. “Does he attend college and go for the MLB Draft after his junior year? Or if he gets drafted (in the first-year player draft next month), and the signing bonus is attractive, does he forgo college and begin the path toward playing in Major League Baseball?”

Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft is set for June 8-10, and scarletreport.com’s Sam Hellman said Harris projects as a high-to-mid-round selection.
