Steve Stricker and Nick Price Name Captains’ Assistants For 2017 Presidents Cup

With the celebration of the United States victory at the Ryder Cup on Sunday and the fitting remembrance of the great Arnold Palmer at his memorial service on Tuesday, golf remained on the minds of everyone Wednesday with the 2017 Presidents Cup Captains’ Day inside the Oculus at the World Trade Center in New York.

United States Captain Steve Stricker and International Team Captain Nick Price were introduced to celebrate the less-than one-year countdown to the event, which will be held Sept. 26-Oct. 1, 2017 at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Stricker and Price also had some news of their own with each naming their captains’ assistants.

Stricker has selected current Ryder Cup Captain and six-time participant Davis Love III, four-time participant Fred Couples, and eight-time member Tiger Woods.

“I’m still on a high from the win last week, probably one that I will never come down from,” said Love in a press release. “To be able to carry that momentum over to the Presidents Cup next year and work with many of the same guys is really exciting for me, and to be a captain’s assistant to one of my great friends will make the experience even better.”

The United States has a record of 9-1-1 since the first Presidents Cup held in 1994 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Prince William County, Virginia.

Price selected eight-time participant Ernie Els, three-time captain’s assistant Tony Johnstone and three-time member Geoff Ogilvy.

“To be with Nick is going to be wonderful,” said Els in the same announcement. “We go back a long time. He was my mentor on the TOUR, and I played a lot of practice rounds with him, got a lot of advice from Nick. We’ve become really good friends since then, and I can’t wait to help him. It’s going to be an unreal Presidents Cup. To be at Liberty National looking at the financial district and the rest of Manhattan, it’s going to be incredible. The energy that comes out of that place is just crazy, and I think – I couldn’t see anything else beating that venue. I think it’s just going to be terrific.”

In 2015, the United States edged the International Team, 15.5-14.5, at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon City, South Korea.

United States Team selection process

The top 10 U.S. PGA TOUR members who have earned the most FedExCup points from Sept. 15, 2015 through Sept. 4, 2017, weighted as follows: 2015/2016: 1 FedExCup point = 1 point; 2017: 1 FedExCup point = 2 points.

Stricker will then name is two Captain’s selections on Sept. 6, 2017.

Presidents Cup points for FedExCup Playoffs Events will be weighted the same as World Golf Championships.

International Team selection process

The top 10 international players (excluding those eligible for the European Ryder Cup team) from the Official World Golf Ranking as of Sept. 4, 2017.

Price will also announce his two Captain’s selections on Sept. 6, 2017.

Presidents Cup format

The structure of the matches includes 30 total points, with five four-ball and five foursome matcheson Thursday/Friday; four four-ball and four foursome matches on Saturday; and 12 singles matches on Sunday.

Each player will be required to participate in two of the first four sessions, with every player competing in the Sunday singles.

The order of the matches for Thursday and Friday will be determined by the host team’s captain, versus being set forth in the competition agreement. Foursome, four-ball and singles matches that are all-square after 18 holes are determined to be a draw, with each team receiving a half point.
