USA Basketball announced the 12-member roster of Team USA’s U-16 Women’s Basketball team, after a week of training camp and team trials. The squad is littered with scores of local talent, including Diamond Miller (Franklin H.S., Somerset, NJ), Celeste Taylor (Long Island Lutheran H.S., Valley Stream, NY) and Kylee Watson (Mainland Regional H.S., Linwood, NJ). They will be heading to Argentina on June 7 to participate in the 2017 FIBA Americas U16 World Championships. They will be gunning for a gold medal, with their legacies, as well as a bid into the U17 World Championships next year, an honor bestowed upon the top four finishers in the tourney. Team USA will have legitimate title hopes in the competition, although there will be staunch opposition from several other competitors. Canada, and the host nation of Argentina figure to be competitive as always. Even so, the United States will be bringing their own level of star power to the table, with several players returning from making appearances on the team or in trials for the 2016 bronze medalist U17 squad. Miller ranked as the 20th-best prospect from the class of 2019 according to espnW, while Watson jumped onto the board for the class of 2020, a list with no specific order. The team is represented by athletes from nine different states, with New Jersey leading the way, along with Ohio and Virginia with two players contributed. Maddie Burke (Central Bucks H.S. West, Doylestown, PA) was elected as a finalist for the team, but was not offered an invitation to join the group after the final round of cuts. The team will continue to practice together at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs until June 4.
