Football The Philadelphia Eagles are the 2019 NFC East Champions by Carly Wolff December 30, 2019 The Philadelphia Eagles are the 2019 NFC East Champions. It’s somewhat difficult to believe after a rather rocky season. Philadelphia had a big win over the New York Giants with a final score of 34-17 on Sunday. After a sloppy first half, the Giants looked as if they were hanging on and could walk away with the win. However, the Eagles opted to hang tough and pull out all the stops to come out on top. Carson Wentz got off to a bit of a shaky start with some lackluster passes, throwing at his receivers’ feet. Coupled with some questionable play calling, the outlook was bleak. Soon after, Wentz came up with a huge play. Perkins ran an excellent route and Wentz was patient with a big pass for a touchdown to get the momentum going. It seemed as if it was one step forward two steps back though as Brandon Brooks and Miles Sanders were injured and did not return to the game. Boston Scott was a key asset to the offense tonight and pushed through for his first of several touchdowns. Immediately following, the secondary had some gap control issues and Saquon Barkley ran the ball back to the house to tie the game 17-17. A big attempt to move the chains was cut short with a holding call on Vaitai. The Eagles have a huge problem with big plays being cut short with stupid penalties. They desperately need to get a handle on that if they want to go anywhere in the playoffs. The tide truly started to turn with a blitz on the Giants leading to a fumble recovery on a bad snap. Fletcher Cox nearly ran it all the way back for a pick six, but left that up to Boston Scott who was sure to clean up. Boston Scott, again, with a large and in charge first down. As the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, a quick handoff to Boston Scott and he collected his third touchdown of the game and secured a nice lead for the Eagles to win. To add insult to injury, Sidney Jones picked off the Giants next drive. The Eagles did not gain anything from this, but it sure made the fans laugh. The Eagles clinched a playoff berth for the third season in a row and fought hard to the very end of this season to do so. This is a team that seemingly faces constant adversity from injuries and still finds a way to win. They owe a lot this season to the players from the practice squad stepping it up on the field, notably Greg Ward and Boston Scott. They look to continue their upward momentum swing with a playoff win next weekend.
