After a non-playoff season in their return to Madison Square Garden, they have not taken the foot off the gas pedal ever since. Now, in its latest move, James Dolan, Executive Chairman of The Madison Square Garden Company, announced the addition of Isiah Thomas as President of the New York Liberty. Isiah, it was made public, has been instrumental in guiding the moves the Liberty have made this offseason. Whether it was the rehiring of Bill Laimbeer, the addition of Herb Williams and Teresa Weatherspoon to the staff, or the trades which brought Epiphanny Prince in, among others. “Isiah has been advising the team, and we are very pleased with the results,” Dolan explained. The move brings Thomas together with his former teammate, Laimbeer, who together won two NBA Championships. The first questions concerning this move is whether Thomas knows enough about the WNBA to be an effective president. Isiah was not moved by the inquiry. “To me, basketball is basketball. These women are outstanding athletes who want to compete for a championship in New York,” he said. “I look forward to this challenge – not just to win a title, but also to help broaden the team’s fanbase.” Isiah has high expectations for this franchise who started as one of the leagues charter members in 1996 and is still thirsting for its first championship. Isiah is setting the bar high. “I am honored to have the opportunity to lead the New York Liberty and help the franchise reclaim its position as one of the elite teams in the WNBA,” Thomas exclaimed.
