It seems like all that the New York Yankees really needed was a Holliday weekend.

New York was able to gain an early lead over the Boston Red Sox in the second inning Saturday, thanks to third baseman Chase Headley, who hit a homer to left field on a 0-1 pitch. Matt Holliday, who just returned from a 10-day DL, popped out to Red Sox shortstop Eduardo Nunez, but little did the fans know that that was just a warm up.

The Yankees began to tense up a bit the following five innings with constant singles, strikeouts and fly-outs. Thankfully, that all changed in the sixth inning.

After shortstop Didi Gregorious took a walk and Headley singled to right-center field sending Gregorious to third, Holliday seemed to think it was time to send his teammates home. The 37 year old turned Red Sox Drew Pomeranz’s fastball into a 443 foot blast into left-field. His 17th home run of the season, first since July 15th at Fenway Park, sent Gregorius and Headley to home plate.

“We missed that from Matty,” Manager Joe Girardi said. “He was such a great run producer in the first half. We weren’t sure when he’d be back, but we knew we had to be patient because of what he’s meant to our club and what he’s done in the past, because he’s been in so many playoff runs before.”

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez added an RBI single in the seventh to finish off New York’s glorious victory.

New York now trails Boston, the leaders in the AL East, by four and a half games. The regular-season finale between these two teams is to be played Sunday night. Luis Severino is scheduled to go against Boston ace Chris Sale.
