Feature Monmouth Park Open for Sports Betting on June 14 by Judythe Ann Michelle June 13, 2018 It’s official, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has signed legislation that will finally allow sports betting in the Garden State to happen. For those that wish to partake, you can head over to Monmouth Park on June 14. Sports wagering is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. The governor of New Jersey plans to be on hand to join in the celebratory event, as will many of those who followed this legislation. Dennis Drazin, chairman and CEO of Darby Development, operators of the racetrack, has expressed joy about this upcoming event. This new legislation allows a licensed casino or racetrack to accept wagers at a sports wagering lounge and can petition to operate a sports pool at a temporary facility. Casinos and racetracks are also able to apply to have an online pool 30 days after the effective date of the bill. The legalities of the legislation involve age requirements mandating that those who place bets are 21 years old and restrictions on athletes, coaches, referees and others with influence of the sporting events be not permitted to wager. Additionally, there will be no wagers permitted on high school sporting events or collegiate athletic events that take place in New Jersey or involve NJ teams. There is hope that sports betting will bring additional revenue in the amount of $13 million to the state in the first year. Double G Sports reporters have been following the legislation involving the legalization of sports betting for years. Remember if you’re going to bet, be sure to bet with your head and not over it, and above all have fun!!
