Baseball Will the New York Mets continue to make big moves? by Jesse Natale January 7, 2019 As the offseason rolls on, the New York Mets continue to make moves. The team has made trades to acquire outfielder Keon Broxton, and infielders, J.D. Davis, and Cody Bohanek. The Mets also shipped Kevin Plawecki to the Cleveland Indians for RHP Walker Lockett, and minor league infielder Sam Haggerty. The question that now lingers is simple: will Brodie and the Mets continue to sign key free agents and execute top quality trades. It can be agreed that these recent moves aren’t much of an eye-opener, and with the talks of an A.J. Pollock signing, it may have felt disappointing to see the acquisition of center fielder Keon Broxton. The Wilson Ramos signing looks good now, but with Plawecki gone who knows if Ramos can hold up for the duration of the season. But the Mets are still in need of relief pitching, specifically a lefty specialist, outfield depth, and depth in the rotation. Trusting Wheeler, Matz, and Vargas is a tough pill to swallow, despite Wheeler’s Cy Young performance in the second half of last year. The injuries have been continuous, which should be all of the more reason to stack up on starting pitching. With just about every team in the National League East bolstering their clubs, there is a demand for the Mets to continue to think big. Despite the dominance of a Familia/Diaz combo, they are still in need of arms in the back end of their bullpen in order to compete with the elite lineups within their division. It is known for many reasons that the Mets contain the money to splurge and separate themselves entirely from the rest of the NL East. It is interesting to see what Brodie has planned for the remainder of this offseason and if the Wilpon’s will prevent the Mets from making the correct moves to put them on top. Regardless of the market being slow, it’s understandable for Met fans to be worried about whether the Wilpons are truly willing to do what it takes. These recent moves have left the Met fan weary of the Wilpons once again and makes them question if the spending has come to a halt.
