Feature After Giants Franchise Tag Pierre-Paul, Is Coughlin’s Extension Next? One coach that is awaiting a contract extension is New York Giant’s head coach, Tom Coughlin. by Staff Post March 3, 2015 (AP Photo/Bob Leverone) The off season for the National Football League is often filled with more business decisions than one could imagine. Contracts, trades, releases, on and off the field woes, injuries, etc. Even when the season has ended we find ourselves googling about our favorite team, trying to stay in the loop about any breaking news. Aside from players being drafted, or traded, consistent coaches are also a plus. Coaches like Vince Lombardi, are coaches we often wish for, but none the less we appreciate our coaches just the same. One of the most important aspects of being a coach is not only coaching but also developing relationships with players, other staff, and the entire organization of a team. It goes without say however that coaches, no matter how good they might be, sometimes await extension of their contracts. It’s hard to understand, but coaches are working under year to year contracts and the trend continues on. One coach that is awaiting a contract extension is New York Giant’s head coach, Tom Coughlin. According to Coughlin himself, the deal is already in rotation. It’s no secret and that doesn’t mean there is no job security for him, it just simply means, hey he’s awaiting an extension on his contract. The team’s co-owner, John Mara has already announced that Coughlin would in fact be returning. No need to get in a panic or start a rumor, we will see Tom on the sidelines for the upcoming 2015 season. Tom stated “there are 32 guys coaching one year at a time, and that’s just the way it is.” He doesn’t seem too worried. Coughlin is also well aware that even with is one year extension that does not mean that he is safe if the Giant’s miss the playoff season in 2015. Bringing back key people including Coughlin will be the focus for the Giants the next few weeks. Aside from his own contract, the Giants also will be looking to bring back their top free agents. Defensive End, Jason Pierre-Paul was the teams top priority and the team placed the franchise player designation on him yesterday. 32 year old safety, Antrel Rolle, who’s also eligible for free agency after completing successfully a five year contract, is another of the team’s priorities. Discussions are under way for Rolle, who served as a team captain for a couple of years. Rolle is one of Coughlin’s favorites and he admires him very much. He stated that Antrel is an outstanding young man and is always concerned with how his team can get better. “I don’t think I’ve ever been that involved with a player that is that sincere about how his team can become better,” said Coughlin regarding Rolle. As free agency starts on March 10, I have no doubt that everything will be worked out for Tom Coughlin. One year, two years, three years, who knows? Coughlin will tell you first however, he’s not worried, so why are we?
