Cashman Says Yanks Will Promote Severino

Brian Cashman and the New York Yankees may have been quiet at the trade deadline, but that does not mean the pinstripers will not be adding to the major league roster.

After failing to deal for a pitcher of any kind on Friday, the Yankees general manager revealed that top prospect Luis Severino will make his next start in the big leagues; on Wednesday Aug. 5 to be exact. The Yankees will be at home to take on the Boston Red Sox.

The announcement is an exciting one for the Yankees, as Cashman refused to deal his prized farmhand – Severino was rated the 23rd-best prospect in baseball by MLB.com prior to the season – and with good reason. Just 21 years old, the righty is 9-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 8.9 K/9 ratio on the season between Double and Triple-A. Even more impressive, he is pitching to a sensational 7-0 record, 1.91 ERA and 0.929 WHIP in 11 starts since being promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

News of Severino’s impending promotion follows not only a rather inactive deadline season for the Yankees, but also comes just a day after it was announced that Michael Pineda was going on the disabled list with a forearm strain. The call-up also comes after the Yankees were once again failed by an ever-so-hopeless CC Sabathia on Thursday night.

Now Severino is coming to help.

Cashman also said that the young flamethrower will not have an innings limit. Currently at 99 1/3 frames on the season, it had previously been speculated that Severino would max out at 15o innings.

With no restrictions and an electric arsenal, Severino could possibly be better than any starter Cashman could have picked up at the deadline. The question is will he be enough?

Pineda is already hurt and always a likely candidate for setbacks. Meanwhile, many consider Masahiro Tanaka a bomb waiting to explode and Ivan Nova has been inconsistent in his return from Tommy John surgery. And again, there is Sabathia and his inability to get major league hitters out. While Severino will certainly provide a boost to the rotation, the Yankees may have been wise to add another stater anyway.

On a separate note, there is the matter of the bullpen, an area Cashman was actively trying to add to on Friday. The Yankees reportedly had interest in Craig Kimbrel, Aroldis Chapman and Carter Capps, but again, no deals were reached.

With that being the case, Cashman said that Andrew Bailey could be in the mix to help out the pen.

Once the Oakland Athletics closer, Bailey won the AL Rookie of the Year award in 2009. He has not pitched in the majors since 2013, but was recently promoted to Triple-A. He had a 0.63 ERA in 11 appearances at Class A Trenton and a 1.59 mark on the year.
