Chubb, Michel, Rankin, and Nwosu to Giants in latest mock draft by ESPN’s Todd McShay

The 2018 NFL Draft is just a couple weeks away, and the New York Giants are in position (No. 2 overall) to select a top talent. Do they take a quarterback to groom as Eli Manning’s successor, a freakish athlete at running back, or the top talent available regardless of position?

Rather than trying to make sense of all the rumors around the league, ESPN’s Todd McShay decided to play GM in his latest mock draft. McShay acted as General Manager of each team, and put together a three round draft.

According to McShay, the Giants could land a very impressive group in the first three rounds later this month.

Round 1 (2): Bradley Chubb, DE, NC State
Round 2 (34): Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
Round 3 (66): Martinas Rankin, OT, Mississippi State
Round 3 (69): Uchenna Nwosu, LB, USC

At No. 2 overall, the Giants select behind the Cleveland Browns, who most expect to select a QB (Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield are the top four). Sure, the Giants could choose one of the remaining three to learn for a year behind Eli. They could also select Penn State running back Saquan Barkley.

McShay however has them taking Chubb, who is arguably the most talented player in the draft. The NC State product is a complete player that would immediately step into the starting lineup. The Giants traded Jason Pierre-Paul this offseason and now have a big need in their pass rush, an area Chubb would fill.

Grabbing Michel in the second round could prove to be a game changer. The Giants need to improve their run game and get away from their one-dimensional offense. Michel is a back that uses a combination of physicality, speed burst, and vision. He’s not the fastest nor the shiftiest runner, but Michel gets yards. He also has the size to pass protect and be involved in the passing game. He has NFL starter written all over him.

Rankin is a big body that would add depth to the offensive line, an area the Giants need continued improvement at. His position in the NFL remains a bit of a debate as he may struggle at tackle. Many scouts have said Rankin could be a very good starter at center, but could succeed at guard as well.

USC linebacker Uchenna Nwosu could be a guy that also helps the Giants pass rush. He brings speed and athleticism off the edge. If the Giants new 3-4 defensive scheme does indeed rely on being aggressive and fast, Nwosu could be very useful.

So, what do you think? Would you sign up for this three round grab if you were the Giants? While it does not secure the quarterback position for the long term, maybe the Giants can find a steal in the later rounds. Or maybe they believe current backup, Davis Webb, is the answer when the Eli era eventually comes to an end.
