BaseballDid Cashman find another steal in trade for Kendrys Morales? Morales is just one season removed from hitting .249 with 21 homers and 57 RBI with the Blue Jays. by Gregg Snyder May 15, 2019 Sure, he’s made the big splashy moves many times. However, New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has made a name for himself in finding the smaller, out-of-nowhere deals that turn out to provide the organization with added production.Has he done it again? Cashman pulled off a deal with the Oakland A’s in which power hitting veteran Kendrys Morales comes to New York in exchange for nothing more than cash considerations or a player to be named later. That’s little to give up for a power bat, and a no-brainer if you are Cashman and the Yankees.Morales had been designated for assignment on Tuesday after hitting .204 with just one home run so far this season (126 plate appearances) with Oakland. That’s well below his career .267 average. While the Yankees sit just one game behind Tampa Bay in the American League East standings, 24-16 overall, the lineup has lacked some consistent thunder with Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and many others having spent time on the Injured List this season. With no timetable for Judge and Staton to return, Cashman saw an opportunity to add more power to the lineup.Morales, a switch-hitter, has great pull power for the left side and could potentially do a lot of damage with the short right-field porch in Yankee Stadium. Morales can also help backup Luke Voit at first base with Greg Bird on the Injured List.Last season, Morales hit .249 with 21 homers and 57 RBI for the Toronto Blue Jays. So why the big drop this year? Morales, 35, has been used primarily as a designated hitter throughout his career. He played 12 games at first base all of last season in Toronto. In Oakland this season, the A’s had already had him playing first base in 23 of the 34 games he started. Will his production increase as he can spent the majority of his time at DH with the Yankees? Only time will tell, but for Cashman, it was a move worth making, one of little risk.
