Giants Sign OT Mike Remmers to One-Year Deal

Dave Gettleman and the New York Giants have made the final move to complete their fully revamped offensive line.

The Giants signed veteran offensive tackle Mike Remmers to a one-year contract on Saturday, according to his agent, Brett Tessler. NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed that the deal is worth $2.5 million, where $1 million is fully guaranteed, while $1.5 million can be earned in play-time incentives. Overall, Remmers can earn $4 million maximum.

Remmers’ Connection With Giants

One thing that is known about this Giants regime, is that they love familiarity. Case in point, former Arizona Cardinals Markus Golden and Antoine Bethea joining former defensive coordinator James Bettcher in New York.

For Remmers, he is acquainted with both Gettleman and head coach Pat Shurmur. Gettleman signed Remmers back in 2014 when he was the general manager of the Carolina Panthers. Two years later, Remmers joined the Minnesota Vikings, where Shurmur served as the team’s offensive coordinator.

In what was perhaps the least surprising news this offseason, the Giants had substantial interest in signing Remmers, after he was cut by the Vikings. So, what took so long?

Remmers underwent minor back surgery this offseason, and a team could not sign him until he was medically cleared by doctors. Remmers received clearance, and is now a New York Giant.

What Remmers’ Signing Means

Remmers, 30, has bounced around the offensive line throughout his seven year career, having played left tackle and right guard. However, Remmers’ natural position is at right tackle, and that’s where he’ll be situated with the Giants this season.

With the addition of Remmers, the swing tackle backup role will be decided in a training camp competition between Chad Wheeler and seventh round pick George Asafo-Adjei.

New York’s new starting offensive line will have Remmers and guard Kevin Zeitler manning the right side of the line. Nate Solder and Will Hernandez will anchor down the left side of the line of scrimmage, just like last season. And hiking the ball for quarterback Eli Manning (or Daniel Jones) is Jon Halapio, who missed the majority of 2018 due to a fractured ankle.
