Gregg Williams named Jets’ Defensive Coordinator

The New York Jets, after a very strange introductory press conference where Adam Gase looked like his eyes were about to pop out of his head, made a great hire when they brought on Gregg Williams to be their defensive coordinator.  Williams is a hot hire after leading the Cleveland Browns to a 5-2 record as interim coach after head coach Hue Jackson was fired.

Williams has had many stints as defensive coordinator, and only two stints as head coach.  His first stint was with the Buffalo Bills, which didn’t turn out too well, as his record between the Bills and Browns is 22-34.  However, what he lacks in head coaching skills he makes up for in his defensive schemes.

Williams is a mastermind at aggressive, mauling defense.  His 4-3 scheme with heavy blitzing, confusion, and a ferocious attitudes are the reason why he still has a job.  Many thought Williams would be blackballed from football after he was found to be paying players off for hurting opposing teams.  As Saints Defensive Coordinator, “Bountygate” swept the nation and Williams was fired, Sean Payton was suspended for a year, and the Saints took a few years to recover.

Many years removed from that scandal, Williams has kept his nose clean, turned around some bad defenses (most recently the Browns), and is ready to get to work as the Jets Defensive Coordinator.  If Williams can get the most out of guys like Leonard Williams and Darron Lee, he’ll be a Godsend to Jets fans.  Only time will tell, but this move was definitely the right one.
