Mishaps Prove Costly in 5-4 Extra Inning Loss for BlueClaws

Extra inning games are nothing new to the BlueClaws who dropped the third game of the four-game series to the Shorebirds 5-4.  Lakewood committed back to back errors and a balk during an ugly 10th which saw reliever Luis Ramirez record drop to 0-3.

The BlueClaws opened the scoring to take 1-0 lead when Quincy Nieporte’s double drove home Jhailyn Ortiz.  But the Shorebirds erupted for three runs in the bottom of the third, thanks to a misplayed ball to centerfield.

But, as they have done much of this early season, Lakewood clawed back to plate two runs in the top of the fourth with a clutch two-out single by catcher Gregori Rivero.

The game remained tied after nine, placing the BlueClaws in yet another extra inning affair.

The BlueClaws were first to strike in extra innings when Yahir Gurrola crossed the plate on a Scott Burke wild pitch.  Burke (1-0) would be credited with the win when the Shorebirds plated two of their own to end the game.

Delmarva proved they weren’t chicken before a crowd of 4,427 at Perdue Stadium, when they bounced back in the 10th.

Shorebird first baseman Seamus Curran’s (3-5) scored the decisive run on a bases loaded single by Branden Burke to earn the win which was aided by three BlueClaw mishaps.

Shorebirds centerfielder TJ Nichting (.333) kept his 8-game hitting streak alive with a single in the 7th inning.

The Shorebirds benefitted as top Oriole prospect Brian Hanifee hurled seven innings of four hit, eight strikeout ball.

The finale of the series is schedule for 2:05pm.  Lakewood (8-8) hands the ball over to Connor Brogdon (0-1) and Delmarva (12-4) calls upon Zac Lowther (2-0) who sports a 0.00 ERA.
