New York Jets Defeated by Miami Dolphins, 20-12

The New York Jets hosted the Miami Dolphins in their first home game of the 2018 season. This was also the home opener for rookie quarterback Sam Darnold. New York drafted him third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Defense dominated the first quarter, with

both teams getting sacks and the Dolphins getting an interception on Sam Darnold. They would turn that turnover into the lone score of the first quarter, a six yard touchdown from running back Kenyon Drake. Miami led 7-0 after the first quarter.

The story was the same through the second quarter. Neither quarterback could get anything done and the Jets turned the ball over a second time.

For the second time, Miami turned a turnover into a touchdown when Ryan Tannehill found Albert Wilson on a short pass. Wilson took the pass 29 yards down the sideline into the end zone to give the Dolphins a 14-0 lead.

The Dolphins domination continued when Tannehill found tight end A.J Derby for a 19 yard touchdown to give them a 20-0 lead following a missed extra point. The Jets had a chance to score with 10 seconds left, but they were stopped at the one yard line as time expired in the first half.

Darnold and the Jets finally got on the board on the first possession of the third quarter when Darnold hooked up with Bilal Powell who took the ball 28 yards to the end zone. They missed the extra point and the score was at 20-6.

That would prove to be the lone score of the third quarter as both teams exchanged turnovers and both offenses stalled. Two field goals for the Jets made it a 20-12 game. Unfortunately, Miami was able to run the clock down and convert a couple third downs to pull out the 20-12. They move to 2-0 on the season while the Jets fall to 1-1.

Miami will head back home to host the Oakland Raiders. The Jets will play against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night.
