(Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images) The New York Yankees don’t want to pay Alex Rodriguez $6 million bonus for tying Willie Mays for fourth on the all-time home runs list at 660. But if Major League Baseball arbitrator Fredrick Horowitz decides the team must pay, Hal Steinbrenner and the Yankees front office will pay A-Rod without fighting it. The Yankees and Rodriguez agreed to the contract as a marketing tool worth $30 million in 2007, separate from the 10-year, $275-million contract extension they also agreed to at the time. The marketing deal was set around A-Rods home run pursuit. According to the contract, Rodriguez was set to receive bonuses of $6 million when he ties Mays, (which he already has), Babe Ruth (714), Hank Aaron (755), and Barry Bonds (762). According to Brian Cashman and the organization, the Yankees aren’t obligated to pay the new proclaimed designated hitter anything. The team released part of the contract that states that the Yankees can pay Rodriguez if the home run chase is “commercially marketable.” However with stains of Rodriguez’s performance enhancing drug scandal of 2014 the Yankees determined the chase was not marketable and therefore the case will head to Horowitz for the final decision. The Yankees and Horowitz are all so familiar, as he lowered Alex Rodriguez’s 211 game suspension to a 162 game suspension. As Rodriguez and the Yankees continue to play, you could say that this agreement may not end with a so called curtain call.
