Football NFL Draft Round Three: Giants Select Georgia LB Lorenzo Carter by Scott Rogust April 27, 2018 With the 66th overall pick in the third round of the NFL Draft, the New York Giants select Georgia linebacker Lorenzo Carter. The 6-5, 250 pound linebacker created one of the scariest linebacker corps with the Bulldogs alongside Roquan Smith. Carter has exhibited toughness, as well as the range to spot tackles all throughout the field. While draft experts have said Carter does not have a prototypical outside linebacker build, he uses it to his advantage by sneaking around blocks to get to the ball-carrier. Not to mention his 34-inch arm length, which he uses to get past blocks and reach for the ball. During his senior season, Carter recorded 62 total tackles (8.5 for a loss), 4.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles (all recovered). His play helped lead the Bulldogs to the National Championship Game. Not to mention his game-saving field goal block in the Rose Bowl against Oklahoma. How Carter Fits in New York The Giants are overhauling their defense, as they are switching from their normal 4-3 to a 3-4 defensive scheme with new coordinator James Bettcher. Carter fits right in, as he can run from sideline-to-sideline to help participate in Bettcher’s aggressive, linebacker heavy defense. The Giants have had a lack of depth at linebacker in recent memory. General manager Dave Gettleman did address that in the offseason by acquiring Alec Ogletree from the Los Angeles Rams. Known for his leadership qualities, he can now take Carter under his wing, and the duo could wreak havoc on opposing offenses. New York entered the 2018 season to revitalize their once dominant defense. The addition of Lorenzo Carter can certainly help the Giants reach that goal.
