Football NFL Draft Round Two: Giants Select UTEP OG Will Hernandez by Scott Rogust April 27, 2018 In the second round of the NFL Draft, the New York Giants select Texas-El Paso offensive guard Will Hernandez. The 22-year-old entered the draft as a projected first round draft pick. However, after the shenanigans in the first round on Thursday, Hernandez fell into the Giants’ lap at the No. 34 pick. The 6-2, 327 pound guard uses his size and freakish agility to give opposing defenders fits. Hernandez has been given the moniker of a “mauler-brawler.” In fact, Hernandez’s pro comparison is the recently-retired Richie Incognito. What Hernandez Brings to the Giants What has ailed the Giants over recent memory? The offensive line. New York has had issues on that front ever since Shaun O’Hara, David Diehl, and Chris Snee stepped away from the game. General manager Dave Gettleman has gushed about his “hogmollies” and the Giants obvious need for them. The Giants offense has struggled due to a turnstile-like o-line. Gettleman addressed that need with a overhaul on the line of scrimmage, most notably in bringing in Tom Brady’s former blindside protector, Nate Solder. Now, Hernandez will line up next to Solder, which could creates a brick wall on the left side. That will certainly help, as an upright Eli Manning with plenty of time in the pocket, can be a dangerous one. With the selection of Saquon Barkley in the first round, it is a match made in heaven for the Giants. The combination of Hernandez and Solder can create holes for Barkley to do his damage in the running game. Let’s not forget that head coach Pat Shurmur is known as an offensive-line guru from his work with the Minnesota Vikings. Under the tutelage of Shurmur, Hernandez has the potential to shine in the NFL and has a shot to become a future Pro Bowler. A first round talent taken in the second round. The selection of Hernandez is a huge-win for Gettleman. Post Views: 1,189 The following two tabs change content below.BioLatest Posts Scott Rogust General Editor and New York Giants Lead Writer.
