Should Yankees Be Interested In Mets Players, Beltran & Rodriguez?

There has been a lot of talk about the New York Mets possibly trading away some of their higher priced players. Just about everyone you talk to about the Mets will say it’s just about inevitable that players like Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran will be traded. Heck, they may even consider trading the face of the franchise David Wright.

Would the Yankees be interested in any of those players? If the season continues on the path it’s currently on, you would have to assume the team in the Bronx would at least take a long look at Beltran. With right fielder Nick Swisher and DH Jorge Posada struggling at the plate, Beltran could provide depth and improve the lineup in both spots.

Beltran would be an upgrade in RF or DH for the Yankees.

Beltran has proven to be healthy enough to play every day in the field, but he may not have to do that as a Yankee. If they did acquire him, the Yankees would likely have Beltran split time in right field and as a DH. He would immediately fit into the Yankees lineup as a player that could hit second or sixth.

The outfielder is currently hitting .287 with 15 doubles and eight home runs while driving in a team high 27.

The Mets have another player the Yankees may want to look into. No, I’m not talking about Jose Reyes or David Wright. Francisco Rodriguez could upgrade the Yankees bullpen.

He is currently a closer for the Mets, but Rodriguez has said he would consider any trade the team was interested in making. He would need to accept a set-up role with the Yankees.

K-Rod could be an excellent set-up guy with Soriano on the DL

Rodriguez would be a guy that is comfortable pitching in New York and has late game experience. He has converted 15-of-16 save chances this season for the Mets and sports a 0.76 ERA. The Yankees bullpen has pitched fairly well and David Robertson and Joba Chamberlain have been just fine in the setup roles. There is no denying however that Rodriguez, known as K-Rod, would lengthen the Yankees pen even more.

It was just announced today that the Mets have agreed to sell a minority share in the team to hedge fund manager David Einhorn. Due to this, noone really knows the approach the team will take with its payroll. You have to think they will look to shrink payroll by trading at least of few of their bigger contracts.

Trading Beltran and Rodriguez would help, and the Yankees should at least give them a long look.

Rafael Soriano was expected to be the bridge to Yankees closer Mariano Rivera when he was signed this off-season. However, Soriano was not pitching well when healthy and is now on the disabled list with an inflamed ligament in his throwing elbow. Soriano visited with Dr. James Andrews and will be out at least 4-6 weeks.
