Baseball SI Yankees fall out of first place after getting swept by the Brooklyn Cyclones by Staff Post July 27, 2016 The Staten Island Yankees have fallen out of first place for the first time this season, after being swept against the Cyclones in their doubleheader yesterday. Taylor Widener, the 12th round pick got the call in game 1 and was impressive in his 3 innings of shut out baseball. He struck out 5, including striking out the side in the first inning. He would come out in the 4th as Brian Trieglaff replaced him. Trieglaff would go 2 innings allowing one run. The Yankees got on board first, in top of the 2nd after Kendall Coleman hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Timmy Robinson. However, that’s all the offense the Yankees batters could come up with as they were scoreless for the rest of the game. The Cyclones would go on to win game one, 2-1. The Yankees would continue to struggle offensively in game two, only scoring 2 runs, en route to a 3-2 loss. Nick Sergakis got the Cyclones on board to start the game, as he ripped a RBI double scoring Blake Tiberi. The Yankees were held scoreless until the 7th inning, after a Timmy Robinson triple drove in Drew Bridges to tie the game at 1. Dom- Thompson would then single, allowing Robinson to score, as the Yankees went up 2-1. The Yankees were one out away from victory, when the Cyclones answered, tying the game in the bottom half after a throwing error by Angel Aguilar allowed Nick Sergakis to score. Heading to the 8th and final inning ( in Single-A Double Headers) , the Cyclones would win in walk off fashion as Peter Alonso hit a sacrifice fly bringing home Gene Cone. The Staten Island Yankees are now 21-17 on the year, and despite falling out of first place to Hudson Valley, they remain confident that they can win the division. Head coach, Bialas said after the game, “ These guys are battlers. We busted our butts all year long and we have just gone through a few spells where we haven’t swung the bats well.” The Yankees will have a great chance to reclaim first place, as they take on Hudson Valley for a 3-game set on Thursday.
