Marcus Browne v. Seanie Monaghan (Boxing Scene)

Just like the upcoming Mayweather v. McGregor bout, one man’s “0” had to go. In a bout that lasted until the second round, undefeated Marcus Browne bested hometown hero Seanie Monaghan in a packed Nassau Coliseum this past weekend, ending his undefeated streak. For one night, Staten Island took over Long Island in a big way. 

It was a fight that had two fighters with a wide age gap between them. The 26-year old Browne (20-0) took care of the 35-year old Monaghan (28-1) in what could have been one of the latter’s last fights. Early in the first, Browne hit Monaghan with a stiff punch that knocked the veteran off his feet for the first time in his career. If it wasn’t for an errant shot below the belt, the punch to the face could have been the end for Monaghan right there. 

Browne took advantage of a dazed Monaghan right away in the second round. His punches were too fast for Monaghan to avoid. As a result, the referee saw enough by the 2:20 mark. He awarded the victory to Browne via TKO. That was his 15th victory via KO.

Monaghan is unsure if his career is close to ending. He did appreciate the support and the hometown welcome he received. Not at all surprising, he also appreciated fighting a young wolf like Browne. Speaking to the media after the fight, Monaghan praised Browne. He would also like to see more from Browne, stating:

“I’ve never been off my feet in my life. It’s weird. It’s not like it hurt. It’s like when you get up too fast and you get dizzy. It was like that, and I fell over. I’m still shocked by it. I’m happy that I lost to Marcus. He’s a great fighter, and I want to see him take it to the limit now.”

Could a potential title shot be the fight that pushes Marcus Browne to the limit? After the fight, everyone from the commentary team to the trainers were picturing him v. WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Adonis Stevenson. In conclusion, he has a lot of supporters. It’s not far off to think Browne has a shot. As one of the most exciting young boxers out there, we could see Browne back in the ring sooner rather than later. 

An entertaining night at the newly renovated Coliseum had people buzzing. For the first time since Mike Tyson headlined in March 1986, boxing ruled Long Island.
