The NYC Showdown is one of several fun events to engage professional athletes and others to help grow visibility, raise money, and have a good time.  This year was no different.  The NYC Showdown returned to Sara D. Roosevelt Park in the East Village to help raise money for the Steve Nash Foundation.

The star-studded pick-up style soccer game attracted stars from the NBA, MLS and local college programs.  Nash was joined by Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson, guard Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, and Republic of Ireland goalie Darren Randolph on Team Black.

Nets guard Jeremy Lin, director of football operations of New York City FC Claudio Reyna, and assistant athletic director of Adelphi University Brooke DeRosa were notables on Team Red. Fans were entertained with two 35 minute halves, and a shootout in-between.

At the half, Lin felt Team Black had better possession, but felt confident Team Red would capitalize on opportunities in the second half, “It’s a close game, 2-2 … my basketball teammate, but my opponent today [Hollis-Jefferson] gave us a chance with that awful penalty kick.”  Rondae was inclined to agree, “It was a rough first half for me … I’m not really locked in because I’m so excited.”  While Hollis-Jefferson wasn’t thrilled with his performance, he kept it all in perspective, “[It’s] a great event, a great cause … being a part of it was a no-brainer.”

“It was an amazing year, it was a lot of fun,” said Nash after the event. For all these athletes and people to come together and do something for children in an amazing feeling.” The Steve Nash continues to raise funds for its programming today in partnership with Chipotle.  Purchase any order before 10pm today and 50% of the proceeds will go to the Steve Nash Foundation.  Happy Burrito Bowling!
