Basketball The Knicks’ Future Rides On Tonight’s Draft Lottery With a 14% shot at grabbing the number one spot, will lady luck be on the Knicks’ side? by Daniel Yanofsky May 14, 2019 It has been a long time since Knicks fans have been excited about a plan surrounding the team. Moments from the last 20 years like signing Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, also while drafting Kristaps Porzingis had fans excited, if only for a little while. Tonight can change all of that. With a little luck of the draw, the Knicks have a chance to grab the top pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. The only thing getting in their way besides themselves? The Draft Lottery, which will take place on ESPN for the world to see. Tonight may be the most important night in Knicks history. Currently tied with three teams to land the number one pick in the draft lottery, the team did all the right things leading up to it. For example, they pledged themselves loyal to tanking, took Kristaps Porzingis out of the equation and didn’t spend big on major players, knowing the free agency class that heads their way. Will it all be worth it in the end? The end goal has always been Zion Williamson. Knicks fans and staff alike have wanted the 6′ 7″ 18-year-old from Duke. With him, they feel like it can open the door for marquee free agents like Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Kemba Walker. While normally the worst team in a league gets the top pick, that is not how the NBA works. While some find it unfair, it has been silent radio-like in New York. Pundits are talking, but the market is nervous for tonight’s outcome, knowing the history of the James Dolan- led franchise. There’s always the chance the Knicks don’t get the top spot in the draft. The hope is that they at least stay in the top five, top three if lucky. Then there’s the Pelicans. With or without Zion, an Anthony Davis trade has interested the Knicks, as long as the right amount of talent are involved. While the draft is filled with a plethora of future stars, the goal has always been to get on top of the mountain. Will New York be able to successfully climb to the top, or will reality fall hard on them, creating an avalanche of continued failure? The clock is ticking, are you feeling lucky?
