UConn gets “punched in the mouth” by Cincinnati

Nobody said it was easy.   The UConn Huskies football team always seems to take one step forward, two steps back.  Or as safety Tyler Cole said “five steps back”.  The blowout loss to Cincinnati, 49-7, was just another example of how the Huskies haven’t learned their lesson when it comes to putting forth full effort for an entire game.

The Huskies are 1-4, 0-2 in the American Athletic Conference, and have shown no signs of life against legitimate opponents.  As per the Hartford Courant, UConn has been outscored by FBS opponents 218-52, the biggest margin of any FBS team.

UConn actually took a 7-0 lead on Cincy, but proceeded to punt the ball four straight times after that and never had a lead again.  David Pindell was absolutely terrible on Saturday, going only 9 for 23 for 125 yards.  The dual threat quarterback only rushed for 22 yards in a disappointing effort.

Running back Kevin Mensah didn’t fare any better, running for only 25 yards on 15 carries.  That’s a 1.7 YPC for those keeping track at home.  The UConn offense stalled as usual, and the special teams didn’t help out as Michael Tarbutt missed another field goal.

The defense was brutal as usual, even though they kept the Huskies within one possession going into the second half.  The wheels fell apart after the missed field goal, as Cincy was able to score on the next four possessions to essentially put the game away in the third quarter.

The UConn defense gave up 659 total yards, the most they’ve given up all season.  Nothing the Huskies tried work, and they just couldn’t stop the juggernaut Cincinnati offense.

What’s worse for this team?  They have to go down to Memphis next week to play the Tigers.  The Tigers are 3-2 but are coming off a tough loss to Tulane.  They’ll be hungry to get back into the win column, and this UConn team has showed zero reason why they won’t be able to roll.  This is an uninspiring football team with an even worse coaching staff.  Randy Edsall blamed the game on himself and said that the team wasn’t prepared because of the football staff, but eventually words just become words and being blown out by 50 points every week becomes tiresome.
