Baseball Barnegat’s Jason Groome Agrees to Terms With Red Sox by Gregg Snyder July 14, 2016 Jason Groome (P. Ackerman – Asbury Park Press) Less than 24 hours before the deadline to sign 2016 draft picks, the Boston Red Sox and New Jersey native Jason Groome have agreed to terms. Groome, a Barnegat native, agreed to a $3.65 million signing bonus with Boston, according to FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman. The money is $457K above the $3.192 million slot value for Groome, the No. 12 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft. The signing of Groome immediately provides the Boston organization with a top of the line pitching prospect. As late as days before the draft, many experts believed Groome could have been selected as early as the top few picks. He fell into the Red Sox lap at No. 12 and they could not pass him up. Keith Law, of ESPN, who rated Groome as the No. 3 prospect in this years draft class, wrote that the lefty has the best high school curveball he’s seen since Lucas Giolito. At 6’6″, 220-pounds, Groome has the size and strength to become a top of the rotation arm. His fastball currently reaches the 92-93 mph range consistently (topping out at 97), to go along with a great curveball and a decent changeup. The Red Sox have also agreed to terms with another New Jersey native when they signed fifth-round pick, Mike Shawaryn. The pitcher, who played at Gloucester Catholic before attending college at the University of Maryland, signed a $637,500 signing bonus.
