Basketball Knicks Waive Trey Burke by Andre Oge October 15, 2017 Almost as quickly as they acquired him, the New York Knicks waived Trey Burke. Burke isn’t exiting New York alone. The 24-year old point guard takes Nigel Hayes and Xavier Rathan-Mayes along with him. With the team hitting the roster maximum with Burke’s signing, it was clear that a few cuts would need to be made. Yet, I don’t think anyone in New York thought Burke would be on the chopping block so immediately. Burke had a less-than stellar year last season with the Washington Wizards. After three seasons with the Utah Jazz, Burke was shipped off to Washington where he averaged only five points per game. He was left in the free agency where he was picked up by the Knicks earlier this week. Burke was thought to be in competition with veteran Jarrett Jack for the final spot on the roster. At the very least it was assumed that he would play for the Knicks’ G-League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks. It appears now that Burke is right back where he started, hoping for another team to pick him by the start of the season. As for the New York, their narrative hasn’t changed much. Their focus is to develop their young talent and use the upcoming season to rebuild. With these cuts now behind them, the team can truly focus on doing just that.
