Alonso breaks Strawberry’s home run record, nabs NL Player of the Week

Pete Alonso has once again proved himself to be the beacon of light during this rocky 2019 season; he now holds the title for most home runs by a New York Mets rookie after launching his 27th homer against the Cubs on Sunday. The record, set by Darryl Strawberry, had been untouched since 1983, but it is now one of the many records that Alonso has conquered since arriving in the big leagues three months ago. He is now in a position to tackle Mark McGwire’s record for most home runs by a rookie before July 1, which is 28.

While chasing that record this week, Pete put on quite the show; he dominated at the plate, going 10-for-24 with four home runs, three doubles, eight RBI and seven runs. His stellar performance landed him NL Player of the Week, while Mike Trout took home the title for the American League. This honor comes days after Pete missed the cut for the Google All-Star Starters Election. He now leads all rookies in home runs and RBI, and is now second in the MLB for home runs, only behind Christian Yelich who currently has 29.

Fans have loved every second of the show that Pete Alonso has put on so far this season, and are waiting to see what else he has in store as the team enters July. After landing NL Rookie of the Month in the beginning of the season and now securing NL Player of the Week, there is no denying the talent and determination of Alonso. As the All-Star break approaches, fans are hoping that Pete’s talents will be on display at this year’s Home Run Derby for all those to see what he is really made of.
