Boxing Both Sean Monaghan and Callum Johnson look to get back on track on March 9th Matchroom Boxing card Both Johnson and Monaghan need a win, with the latter going 1-2 in his last three fights. by Daniel Yanofsky February 7, 2019 After losing major fights, two fighters are looking to gain a competitive edge against one another in March. Long Island’s Sean Monaghan will face off against international star Callum Johnson on March 9th inside the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York. This Matchroom Boxing card will be airing live on DAZN and Sky Sports. A gold medalist in the Commonwealth Games, Johnson (17-1) lost his perfect record fighting over the vacant IBF light-Heavyweight Title against Artur Beterbiev via fourth TKO back in October. This will be his second-ever fight inside the United States, his first being the Beterbiev fight. “I know that if a second shot comes my way, I will be more than ready for it with the experience of Chicago behind me,” Callum stated. “Sean always puts everything into his fights and he badly needs this win, just like I do, so there should be fireworks.” With 12 wins via knockout, Johnson is hoping the previous loss will not deter him away from future opportunities. As for Monaghan (12-2), he is looking to be more consistent in his fighting. In his last three fights, Long Beach’s Monaghan is 1-2, his last fight a unanimous decision loss to Sullivan Barrera in Brooklyn. Taking a year off after beating Evert Bravo, Sean went the distance against Barrera in an impressive outing. Monaghan knows how competitive Johnson is, and will be doing whatever it takes to outsmart his latest rival. “I’ve had my eye on Callum since before the Beterbiev fight,” Monaghan stated. “He has a come forward pressure style and our styles should make for a fan friendly fight. I know these Brit’s always come in shape so I’m already working very hard. This is a fight I absolutely need to win. No excuses, it’s do or die for me.” Monaghan v. Johnson joins an epic card featuring Dmitry Bivol defending his WBA Light-Heavyweight Title against Joe Smith Jr. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com (starting at $49) and the Turning Stone box office.
