Boxing Brooklyn’s Zachary Ochoa’s stock continues to rise after a Madison Square Garden victory The Brooklyn native is moving up in the welterweight division. Who’s next for the Brooklyn native? by Daniel Yanofsky December 2, 2017 As the world prepares for the final fight for Miguel Cotto, several young talent are looking to make a name for themselves. One of them is Zachary Ochoa, who defeated Erick Martinez via Unanimous Decision (60-54) on tonights undercard show. Ochoa (18-1), a clear favorite, had the crowd behind him throughout the six-round fight. Zachary Ochoa has now won two in a row. With the win, he can look past his only loss against Yves Ulysse Jr. earlier this year. Since his pro debut at age 19 in 2011, Ochoa has been a force to be reckoned with in the welterweight division. Speaking after the fight, Ochoa discussed what he needs to improve on and how it translates to his future success. He stated: “This puts me in a great spot in my career. I was shaking off a lot of dust since I haven’t been able to fight consistently, but this proves to me that I’m still worthy of the sport. I still have work to do, but when I was able to land my shots I was able to connect them crisp and effectively.” What does the future hold for Zachary Ochoa? With a stacked welterweight division, Ochoa will have to wait on a long line in order to be considered ready. However, under the bright lights of New York City, Ochoa has definitely done enough to prove his toughness. His strikes are lethal enough to chop down anyone in his path. If that wasn’t enough, this was his third fight in 2017. With boxing returning to Brooklyn in early 2018, there may be more opportunities for Ochoa to shine. On his way out, Cotto might be someone Ochoa can rely on for pointers. Besides fighting inside MSG, something like that would be something Ochoa would love sink his teeth into.
