Devils Continue to Support Newark Schools with Hockey Rink

New Jersey Devils Ring in the First Day of one lucky Newark School

It was a humid first day of School for the kids of Phillip’s Academy in Newark, New Jersey.  However, the elementary school children had no  idea of the huge surprise waiting for them behind their gym.  A brand new “hockey rink” with rubber matting now sits in this Newark School’s playground.  The finishing touch on the rink is a huge Devils’ logo right in the middle.  Before the children were called down for an assembly a quick ribbon cutting took place.

Representatives from the Newark Community, Philip’s Academy, NJ Devils, Prudential Center, and United Airlines.  After a quick welcome by the schools principal, Yasmeen Sampson, and a few speakers that included Newark’s Mayor, Ras Barka the gym’s curtain was parted.  The children’s excitement was incredible to watch.  In addition to their new rink, they had a huge party through for them.   It included a DJ, cornhole, an inflatable goalie booth, another hockey rink, and NJ Devil.  They got to play on the new rink with NJ Devil and Mayor Barka along with Devils longtime center Travis Zajac.

Fostering a Community

The Devils’ have long supported the state of New Jersey.  However, giving back to the community that houses their home, the Prudential Center, has a special place in their hearts.  Throughout their years in Newark, the Devils have tried to be a positive force in the city.  They have visited Newark Schools, held sports clinics, and have done charity events to help their community.  They are a wonderful, powerful force in helping foster the community of Newark.

Give 82

This year the Devils & Prudential Center are asking all members of the organization to do at least 82 hours of community service throughout the state.  The program named “Give  82” with 82 being the year the moved to New Jersey from Colorado.  United Airline has also joined Give 82.  They have been named presenting partner of the Devils and Prudential Center.
