Jets able to lure center Ryan Kalil out of retirement

In a shocking move, the former five time All-Star and two time All-Pro Center Ryan Kalil has agreed to terms with the New York Jets.  This comes after Kalil announced his retirement and left the Carolina Panthers.

It’s a move that comes as a surprise to all, and a great move for the Jets.  The Jets have longed for a center after the retirement of Nick Mangold and although Kalil is past his prime, he’s the perfect mentor and calming force for young quarterback Sam Darnold.

If Kalil can get close to his All-Pro performance in 2015, the Jets will have a much improved offensive line.  Even if Kalil can’t get to that point, he will still provide plenty of insight and knowledge to drop on the rest of his offensive line and his future star quarterback.

Regardless of where Kalil stands physically, it’s a fantastic signing for Joe Douglas and the Jets, and proves that the Jets are certainly looking to take the next step this season.  It’s about winning now, not “incremental steps”.  Having an All-Pro center at the helm of the offensive line is a big step in the right direction.
