Jets sign Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater to 2018 roster

“Who Will be the Next New York Jets quarterback this next season?” is a question that has been coming up again and again every season with the NY Jets. This past season, Josh McCown won the quarterback race against Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty. He had a good performance during the season, putting in career high numbers, completing 67% of his passes for 2,926 yards. He also threw for 18 touchdowns in 13 starts with the Jets, before going on IR for a broken wrist.

Tuesday, the Jets took him off free agency and signed him for a year under a 10 million dollar contract.

There were several assumptions as to who the Jets would sign, which included the much sought after QB, Kirk Cousins, who is expected to sign with the Minnesota Vikings for an &85 million, 3-year contract. As of now, McCown is expected to start this season, but the Jets also completed a one-year deal with former Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater.

Bridgewater has been flying under the radar since his 2016 injury, where he suffered a dislocated knee and a torn ACL during a non-contact drill during practice.

Bridgewater was drafted out of Louisville as the 32nd pick by the Minnesota Vikings in in the first round in 2014, and he entered as second string quarterback behind Matt Cassel. After Cassel got injured he became the starting QB. Bridgewater guided the Vikings to an NFC North title in 2015, going 11-5. He also earned a spot in the Pro Bowl that season.

Bridgewater is an ideal addition to the Jets, especially looking back at his history, and what he did with the Vikings. Perhaps, if given the opportunity, Bridgewater could help build up confidence and help lead the Jets as he’s done with his previous team.

The Jets also still have quarterbacks Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty who seem to be the odd men out during this whole gang green rebuilding season. What will be their role in this new saga is still to be determined, with Bridgewater and McCown on the roster, its most probable we’ll have to say goodbye to one of them, if not both.

There is also talk that the Jets will pick up a quarterback this upcoming draft, as they have the No. 6 overall pick in April. If so, Hackenberg and Petty definitely will have to say goodbye as having four signal callers is a little unrealistic, even for the Jets.

If talks are true and the Jets do get to pick a quarterback early in the draft, pairing Josh Rosen/Sam Darnold/Josh Allen/ or Baker Mayfield with McCown and Bridgewater could definitely be effective as both veterans have a lot of wisdom and experience to share.

As Jets fans are kept waiting for the next moves; every one can hope Coach Bowles and GM Maccagnan give both veteran quarterbacks a fair chance at earning a starting role, and hopefully this season produces better results than many previous seasons for the Jets.
