College LIU Women’s team slide continues after falling to University of Maryland-Baltimore by Jason Cordner December 22, 2016 Shanovia Dove (Photo via LIU Athletics) No sleep in Brooklyn last night. Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams fell in front of the home town crowd. The LIU Brooklyn women’s basketball team fell to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers, 57-45. Senior Shanovia Dove recorded a double-double, with 19 points and 10 rebounds, which tied her season-best. The Blackbirds dropped their season record to 1-10 in the defeat. UMBC had a well balance attack. Tyler Moore led the way with 19 points, adding six rebounds. Castaldo finished with 15 and 8 rebounds. Taylor McCarley scored 16 points. Besides Shanovia Dove , nobody else scored in the double digits. The starting lineup for the Blackbirds only scored 15 points in the game. Both teams couldn’t find an offensive rhythm in the first half. The Blackbirds lead 15-13 at the half. LIU’s biggest lead in the second half was only five points. That was in the third period. UMBC used a big run early in the third to take a lead they would not relinquish. Junior Laura Castaldo hit nine straight points in the third to push UMBC in front 23-16. UMBC took a 35-30 advantage into the fourth and final quarter. LIU couldn’t get a rebound and make key defensive stops in the fourth quarter. UMBC ended the game on a 13-2 run. Sloppy play did LIU in. The BlackBirds Committed 23 turnovers, which lead to 22 points for UMBC. The Retrievers shot 37.3 percent from the field, holding the Blackbirds to 29.8 percent. Hard to win basketball games, when your struggling to make shots and consistently turning over the basketball.
