Baseball New York Mets Named Double G Sports Men’s Team of the Year and Most Improved Team Awards by Kristine Haugsjaa January 6, 2017 (Credit: Getty Images / Win McNamee) Coming off their 90-72 record and making their World Series appearance in 2015 for the first time since 2000 when they faced the New York Yankees, the New York Mets started off the 2016 season making history. The Mets faced the Kansas City Royals, making it the first time in history that two former World Series opposing teams met on Opening Day. After starting the season strong earning 15 victories of the first 22 games, the Mets began to level out before making a strong comeback in August, earning them a spot in the post season for the second consecutive time where they lost to the San Francisco Giants. They finished the season 87-75. The 2015 and 2016 seasons have been the biggest for the franchise since 2006 when they won the Eastern Division Title and 2000 when they won the National League Pennant. Prior to then, the team had not won a major league title since the late 80’s. The rebirth of the Amazin’ Mets over the last two seasons has given their die hard fans hope that they will be making not only their sixth World Series appearance in 2017 but earning their third World Series win. The New York Mets were up against strong competition this year for both categories. Finalists for Men’s Team of the Year included the professional soccer teams, the New York Red Bulls and New York Football Club and 2016 Arena bowl champions, the arena football league Philadelphia Soul. Finalists for Most Improved Team included the New Jersey Devils, Connecticut College Women’s Soccer and Seton Hall’s Men’s Basketball.
