Soccer Red Bulls Waive Homegrown Player by Staff Post March 9, 2016 Following their opening day loss, the Red Bulls cut ties with a homegrown player. Scott Thomsen — a long-time member of the Red Bulls organization — was waived on Monday. Thomsen was officially signed as a homegrown player in December but had previously played for the Red Bulls U-18 and U-23 which won a national title in 2004. Thomsen also had a successful career at the University of Virginia as well, including an NCAA championship in 2014. It’s always sad to see a native New Jersey resident —Thomsen is from Brick, New Jersey — cut from his hometown team, but for the Red Bulls it was time for them to make the move and create space. For Thomsen he’s had success everywhere he’s been prior to this transaction and it will be interesting to see if and when he lands on his feet with a new team.
