Feature Should the Jets wait until season’s end to fire Todd Bowles? by Chris Passarelli December 4, 2018 At this point it’s safe to say that Todd Bowles will not be the coach of the New York Jets next season. The question now is, when will he be fired? Do they wait until after the season to can him, or put him out of his misery now? There are two sides to the coin, so let’s explore both of them. The more logical choice would be to let Bowles go immediately and have an interim head coach ride out the rest of the season. Bowles is a lame duck coach and after another embarrassing loss, this time to the Titans, it’s about time to put him out to the pasture. The problem for Bowles this year hasn’t been the losses. If anything, the Jets are exactly where they should be from a talent standpoint. They just aren’t a very good team, have very few weapons, and with the injury to Sam Darnold don’t have much to be excited about. The defense is young and inexperienced. However, the biggest issue with the Jets has been the utter lack of effort the team has put forth in multiple games. The most recent game against the Titans was a complete collapse, and the biggest example of the Jets giving up on a game was their abomination at home against the Buffalo Bills. Quite honestly, Bowles should have been fired that Monday. A counter-argument to this is hard to defend, but there is one there. For one, even if it may not seem like it (and most certainly isn’t the case), it seems the Jets players genuinely like Todd Bowles and are looking out for the coach’s best interests. Actions speak louder than words, but the players off the field do seem to have the coach’s back. Firing Bowles would lower the team morale to the point of no return. Having only three wins is enough to cause a huge rift in the locker room, but the firing of a player friendly coach would bring the locker room to a point the Jets couldn’t repair. At the end of the day, none of it really matters because there are only a few weeks left in the season. It’s only a matter of time before the Jets fire Bowles, but should they shake up what’s already a terrible season? There’s an argument both ways.
