St. Peter's Prep Star Gives Verbal To Rutgers

It’s been decades since Rutgers University was able to add a St. Peter’s Prep recruit to the football program. This season, the Scarlet Knights are trying to obtain the services of three star players from the Jersey City school.  They now have landed at least one of the three.

Keith Lumpkin, a 6-9 285 pound lineman, walked into Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano’s office yesterday to inform him of his intentions to wear scarlet and white next season. It just so happens that Rutgers offensive line coach, Kyle Flood was there as well. Both coaches were apparently very excited.

 Rutgers now hopes Lumpkin can help them recruit. He has two highly regarded teammates that Rutgers would love to add to their 2011 recruiting class.

Lumpkin, a three star recruit, was rated as the 11th overall prospect in New Jersey and the 35th best offensive tackle in the country. While still raw in some areas, the potential for this kid is off the charts. Lumpkin said he chose now to make the announcement because he wanted to get it over with before his high school season started.

He is the anchor of an offensive line for arguably the states top high school team this season. St. Peter’s Prep had been thought of as the states’ number two team the past couple years behind national power Don Bosco Prep. With Lumpkin anchoring an offensive line that will pave the way for teammates Savon Huggins and  Sheldon Royster, it’s hard to argue how strong the St. Peter’s Prep  team is this season.

Huggins is the biggest name. Rated the nation’s number nine running back and 57th overall prospect, Huggins would be a huge get for Rutgers. Royster is also a highly regarded recruit that Rutgers is in on.

How exciting would that be if Rutgers could gain the services of three star players from the same local high school. All three being national recruits.

It started with Lumpkin. Will the other two follow? We will have to wait and see.

Lumpkin chose Rutgers over offers from Michigan State, North Carolina, South Carolina, South Florida, Wisconsin, among others.
