Tauchman out 6-8 weeks with Grade 2 calf sprain

The 2019 season appears to be over for a Yankee fan favorite. Mike Tauchman came up limping in Sunday night’s 10-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Tauchman fielded a ground ball in the outfield and hobbled off the field. He was replaced by Cameron Maybin in left field.

It was revealed on Monday morning by Manager Aaron Boone that Tauchman had a Grade 2 calf sprain, which is a 6-8 week timetable for recovery. Unfortunately for The Sock Man, the season will be all but over in eight weeks and the injury pretty much ends his season.

Tauchman had been a bit cold of late, but he was still extremely productive at the bottom of the Yankee lineup. His .277 average was obviously a career high, as was his 13 home runs and 47 RBIs. Probably the biggest part of Tauchman’s game that the Yankees will miss will be his defense.

With Giancarlo Stanton expecting to return on the next Yankee homestand, Tauchman’s injury leaves the outfield a little less cluttered. Stanton’s eventual return will relegate Cameron Maybin and Brett Gardner to the bench (potentially) and keep Clint Frazier off the playoff roster.

Regardless of who is taking Tauchman’s spot, it will be big shoes to fill in left field as he not only made an impact on the field, but off the field as well. Tauchman is a heart-and-soul kind of guy and his attitude is what endeared him to the fans. Hopefully, Tauchman has a speedy recovery and is back to where he left off next year.
