With all that he has done over the course of his career, you would think that at some point Temple’s senior guard Will Cummings would have been named the conference player of the week at some point. Although he has been on the weekly honor roll many times,  this week’s honor marks his first time ever being named the conference player of the week and just the second player on the Temple roster to earn it this season with senior guard Jesse Morgan being the other (December 29).

The Jacksonville, Fla. native averaged 19 points, 5.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in the two Temple wins this week. The Owls have now won seven games in a row, the current conference-best streak.

On Tuesday, Cummings led all scorers with 21 points, five assists, and matched his season high of four steals in the victory over the Cincinatti Bearcats. He also played all 40 minutes of the game. He followed with 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals on Saturday versus East Carolina. The Owls guard shot 14-for-17 from the free throw line in the two games. Cummings currently leads the Owls and The American in seven categories: scoring (13.7 ppg/7th), assists (4.1 apg/5th), steals (1.8 spg/2nd), free throw percentage (.778/9th), free throws made (132/1st), assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0/2nd) and minutes per game (34.0 mpg/5th).

With the win over ECU, Temple improves to 19-7 overall, 10-3 in The American. The next two games are on the road where their streak will be tested against the top two teams in the conference. On Thursday, the Owls face nationally-ranked SMU for a 7:00 p.m. ET tip off. On Sunday Temple plays Tulsa at 6:00 p.m. ET. The games will be available on ESPN2/1210 AM WPHT and CBS SN/1210 AM WPHT, respectively.
