The Jets are back to being a dysfunctional organization

It only took a few weeks for the New York Jets to reclaim their crown atop the mess of incompetent New York franchises.  This all comes after the firing of former GM Mike Maccagnan.  The firing came as a result of discord between Head Coach Adam Gase and GM Maccagnan.

The firing comes as a complete surprise to Jets fans and media alike.  It doesn’t make any sense firing Maccagnan now, because he helped in the coaching search, the scouting and ultimately the drafting process for this season.  His fingerprint is all over this team and to have him gone now instead of in December when Todd Bowles was fired is foolish.

Now owner Christopher Johnson has given the reins of the team to Gase, who is acting as interim GM while the search for a new one is conducted.  The favorite is supposedly Eagles’ VP of Player Personnel Joe Douglas, a close friend of Gase.

How Gase got this much control this quick over the Jets is beyond Jets fans.  Gase is 23-26 as a Head Coach and only has one appearance in the postseason, losing that contest.  He has no sustained track record of success and although he’s never had a franchise quarterback to lead his team has never really been the “quarterback whisperer” that everyone makes him out to be.

Add in the fact that he’s already isolated newly signed teammates Le’Veon Bell and C.J. Mosley and you have a recipe for disaster.  Mentioned first by Ian Rapoport, the rift between Maccagnan and Gase started when Maccagnan signed Bell and Mosley to what Gase deemed “too high” of a price tag.

The Jets fans frustrations can be played out in one tweet by Field Yates.  It wasn’t that Maccagnan was the world’s greatest GM.  In fact he was far from that.  However, he did draft Sam Darnold and if he were to be fired, it should have been BEFORE he had his imprint on the offseason and draft.

It’s more of the same for the Jets, who looked to be turning the corner with a franchise quarterback, top tier running back and feisty defense led by Mosley and Jamal Adams.  If the Jets win, none of this matters.  But if Gase winds up coaching the Jets to a 6-10 season and things start to get heated in the locker room, you can point to this as the starting point.
