The Jets should go after Mike McCarthy

It’s been a question asked many times over by Jets fans;  Should they actually go after Mike McCarthy for the head coaching position?  McCarthy fell out of favor with Aaron Rodgers after many years of bickering, and eventually he was let go earlier this season by the Packers.  This has more to do with his sour relationship with Rodgers than anything else, but regardless he is free to speak to whomever he pleases, and with eight vacancies he will have plenty of suitors.

Enter the New York Jets, who finished off another disappointed season with a 38-3 blowout by the New England Patriots.  Todd Bowles was ultimately relieved of his duties after another disappointing season, but the writing was on the wall from the beginning of the season.  Bowles essentially needed to get to at least seven wins to keep his job, and anything less would be unacceptable.

So why do Jets fans have such an issue with the Jets looking at McCarthy?  Well for one, they believe that most of McCarthy’s success stems from having one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.  Despite their differences, McCarthy and Rodgers had a ton of success together and won a Super Bowl.  Once that relationship soured it was only a matter of time before McCarthy would be fired.

But was Rodgers the lone factor in McCarthy’s success as head coach?  Possibly, but it’s still pretty damn hard to win a Super Bowl with or without an elite quarterback.  Dan Marino never won one.  Neither did Jim Kelly or Fran Tarkenton.  It’s always better to have an elite quarterback on your team, but that doesn’t mean that all of the success can only come from them.  It also doesn’t mean that all of the blame should be put on the coach when they don’t win.

The Jets need a culture change.  Mike McCarthy didn’t need to change the culture in Green Bay because he had Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, but he sure as hell knows how to win.  Bringing in a coach with that much success, regardless of who is “responsible” for it is huge for a young quarterback like Sam Darnold.  With McCarthy, the sky is the limit.  Take it or leave it Jets fans, but the Jets are a much better team with Mike McCarthy at the helm.
