Yankees Hot Corner – Oil and water; The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is back

Every few years, we get these analysts saying that the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry has lost its luster.  We get people saying they wish it was the good ol’ days where A-Rod was batting Jason Varitek’s glove away or Pedro Martinez was throwing Don Zimmer on the ground.

It’s no secret that when the Yankees and Red Sox are both good and get together, there are to be fireworks to be followed.  They are the greatest rivalry in sports.  There is so much history between the two franchises, whether it be the Curse of the Bambino that spanned 86 years until the Sox won a World Series in 2004, or all the brawls in the late 90’s, early 2000’s.

Unfortunately, most of the analysts were right in their statements that the matchups haven’t had the same oomph that they once had.  This changed last night when Tyler Austin stormed the mound after being hit by Joe Kelly as retaliation for going spikes up on a slide in the third inning against Brock Holt.  The benches cleared and there were punches thrown, as Austin connected with the Red Sox third base coach and Kelly got a few shots in on Austin.  Both Austin and Kelly have been suspended, Austin for five games for charging the mound and Kelly six for the intentional hit and fighting.

Tyler Austin and Joe Kelly are the types of players you want on your team.  They have that piss and vinegar attitude that rub a lot of people the wrong way.  They are both hot-headed and the exact kind of players that will re-fuel the hate in this rivalry.  Look for this game to be the kind of game that will keep the matchups heated for at least the next few seasons.

The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is back and better than ever.  No one wants to mess with Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, but it’s a case of no love lost between the two teams.  This is what’s best for baseball, as their two marquee franchises battle it out for the rest of the year.  Regardless of what happens by the end of the season, these series will be MUST watch.  It’s good to be back.  Boston sucks.
