Yankees to celebrate 1998 World Championship team with August 18 reunion

Later this month, the New York Yankees will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the 1998 World Championship team.

On Friday, August 17, the first 10,000 guests in attendance for the Yankees game vs the Toronto Blue Jays, will receive a 1998 World Championship Replica Trophy. The following day, Saturday, August 18, the Yankees will hold an on-field celebration of the ’98 team. On Sunday, August 19, the first 10,000 guests 14 and younger will receive a 1998 World Championship Replica Ring.

The 1998 Yankees finished with a franchise record regular-season standing of 114–48, 22 games ahead of the second-place Boston Red Sox in the American League East. The 114 wins was an American League record for wins in a season, until 2001, when the Seattle Mariners won 116 games.

Considered to be one of the greatest teams in baseball history, managed by Joe Torre, the Yankees went on to win the World Series. They swept the Texas Rangers in the American League Division Series, won the American League pennant by beating the Cleveland Indians four games to two in the American League Championship Series, and swept the San Diego Padres to capture their 24th World Series.

Including the playoffs, the 1998 Yankees won a total of 125 games against 50 losses, an MLB record.

Bernie Williams won the 1998 American League Batting Title after hitting .339. Derek Jeter led the league in runs scored with 127. Joe Torre was named Manager of the Year.

On May 17, 1998, David Wells became just the second pitcher in franchise history to throw a Perfect Game, accomplishing the feat against the Minnesota Twins. This was one of many spectacular feats by the ’98 Yankees, one that was celebrated earlier this year at a benefit for the Perfect 33 Foundation.

Among the list of attendees scheduled to attend the 1998 Yankees Reunion are Wells, Torre, Williams, Jorge Posada, David Cone, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Tino Martinez, Paul O’Neill, Darryl Strawberry, Chuck Knoblauch, Graeme Lloyd, Jeff Nelson, Willie Randolph, Luis Sojo, and Shane Spencer.

In addition to those in attendance, former Yankees captain and current Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter and 1998 World Series MVP and current Seattle Mariners coach Scott Brosius, will have special video messages.
